What is post surgery physiotherapy?
Rehabilitation of an individual after a surgery is important to get back to normal or optimal functional status.
Physiotherapy exercises and other specific activities done after an orthopaedic or any surgery is known as post surgery physiotherapy.
Orthopedic surgeries like knee or hip replacements, ligament repair or reconstruction, shoulder surgery, spine surgery, ankle fracture or sprain surgery, hand injuries etc. are common surgeries that require Physiotherapy.
The surgical site and adjoining joints and muscles become weak after a surgery which is absolutely normal for any individual to experience.
This weakness can be reduced through appropriate Physiotherapy exercises and functional rehabilitation.

Functional Rehabilitation and Independence
The ability to carry out functional activities of daily living is of utmost importance for every individual. Activities include sit to stand transition, standing, walking, climbing stairs, crossing the road, driving a vehicle etc. A Physiotherapist is a qualified expert to bring you back to your highest level of functional independence.
Exercises and activities are designed according to individual needs and requirements.
For example, a chair or a walker is used to help you come to a standing position. Once you are able to stand, exercises are done in standing position to increase your ability to stand for a longer time and walk subsequently.
You may ask your Physiotherapist to train or guide you for a particular task or activity that you require in your daily routine.
Every surgery is different
Every joint, bone, muscle, ligament or tendon requires a different surgery and therefore Physiotherapy is different as well.
For example, a knee surgery requires a different set of exercises to be done from that of a shoulder surgery.
How long do I need to exercise after my surgery?
Duration of Physiotherapy exercises depends on individual surgery and other factors related to the patient. Your Physiotherapist will guide you on this and will form an appropriate protocol for a set duration to help you achieve a normal or optimal pre-operative status.
You must continue to exercise until advised to stop. Any discomfort or pain, swelling noticed after exercise should be informed immediately to your Physiotherapist.
General exercises after any Orthopedic surgery
