*What is an Achilles tendon Rupture?
Achilles tendon is the strong band that joins the calf muscles to the heel. When this band breaks or is torn, it is known as Achilles tendon Rupture.
*When does it occur?
There are 2 main reasons:
1. Trauma or injury
2. Degeneration or gradual weakening of Achilles tendon.
Most commonly, it occurs in people with existing heel pain present behind the leg.
*What to do next?
1. Consult an Ankle Surgeon immediately for treatment. You will be advised either a boot to be worn for 6-8 weeks or a repair surgery.
2. Physiotherapy:
After successful healing for 6-8 weeks, Physiotherapy will be begun.
Physiotherapy consists of:
• Gentle progressive strengthening of your healing Achilles tendon and other hip and knee muscles.
• Balance training exercises
• Walking pattern correction
• Exercises aimed at return to Functional activities and Sports.
